I finally put up a custom banner on this template so come out of your RSS readers and tell me what you think. I’m working on a complete relaunch of this site and hope to have it done in another 90 days but you all know I’m slacker so that may not happen. I’ve started to give my self deadlines to break the habit but so far it’s been unsuccessful. I started this site out as a blog to cover the poker scene here in Denver, but I’ve always had aspirations to make it something more. Problem is I always have too many ideas and too short of an attention span to get one project done.
To get back to this blogs original intentions I thought I should play some local poker and went up The Hill to Black Hawk this past weekend. I’d gone up a couple times the past couple months but had little success. I also dropped a lot of coin and decided I would chill out until I felt that I could walk away after a loss. I’ve been playing at The Ameristar Casino because a buddy of mine really likes it. It is the nicest casino in Black Hawk. It is also the most “Vegas” like casino, whatever that means. Basically it’s themed like a log cabin with the bar located in the center and fire places located on the outside of the center.

I’ve got to admit that it is my favorite casino but not my favorite place to play. The games always seem too nitty and I’ve never had a win there. I like to play where I win and the player types fit my style. The casino I feel I do best at is Colorado Central Station so that’s where I decided to play.
The room is small and the play is generally passive. Some old timers and mostly middle aged players. The room its self is not very impressive with maybe 10 tables. I’ve eeked out mostly small wins here but overall it has to be the casino I win the most at. The day started off up and down with my $100 buy in reaching lows of $60 and highs of $120. Nothing real eventful, just played tight and straight up. That’s really all you can do at a $2-$5 limit table anyway. After about 4 hours in a older Asian gentleman, Mr. don’t mess with me guy (MDMWMG), I’ve played with before was playing while he was waiting for a $5-$5 game to start.
(Disclaimer - If you read any further, I may or may not owe you $1)
$5-$5 players tend to be more of a maniac than your average player but this guy tended to show some reserve if he was 3 bet. I hadn’t been making any money and was considering leaving soon when we got involved in this hand. I had black Aces in the blind and he raised from the 3 seat, about 3 off of the button. I’m in the 7 seat. A couple callers and I pop it and he re-pops it which loses the flat callers. We cap it and we’re off. The flop was pretty uncoordinated so I checked to him and was able to check raise him. He smooth called me the rest of the way when I bet every street and I was a little over my original buy in.
Next altercation -Less than one round of the button and it gets to his blind… I pick up pocket Kings and raise it up after it’s folded around to me. Like clock work MDMWMG re-pops it and we cap it pre-flop for $30. The flop comes out AK3 all puppy feet and he decided that he was going to check raise me which led us to capping the flop. He check called the turn and mucked on the river once the clubs didn’t get there. So the guy way over valued his hands and didn’t like the fact that someone was willing to “mess” with him. He had about $20 left in front of him after those two hands and decided to take a walk.
After those two hands I was at a decent profit for $2-5 (~ $80) but bled down to about $160 while he was on his 30 min cool down walk. That’s what I thought it was at least, but when he returned we got right back into the groove of things. He rebought for $100 and waited for his blind to come before he played a hand.
The reason I call him MDMWMG is because of this hand. During his cool down walk he must have decided that he was going to teach me a lesson. Don’t Mess With Me Guy! He posted his blind and was welcomed back to the game with a raise from me with red Jacks. He slammed down a fist full of chips and claimed, ” I raise, we going to cap this one out!”. I tried not to chuckle as a UTG limper was caught between us for his last $30. The flop came out J-3d-2d. MDMWMG was also going to get fancy here and show me how good of a player he was by check raising me on this board. When I re-rasied him he claimed, “Oh you going to raise me???? No I raise you!”. He seemed a little stunned as I sat there silently and slid out a stack for a raise but he quickly regrouped and slammed down a stack that capped the flop.
The turn was a diamond but I just knew this guy did not have a Flush with the AdKd. He continued his fancy play and check raised me again which led to a capped turn. At this point the total pot is $210 and I’ve put in $90 of my $160. The river was another diamond and he check raised me again and I decided just to call him because the fucker had the AdJc. He said something I couldn’t quite hear but I’m sure it was something like, ” Don’t mess with me” and I just smiled, composed and ready for the next hand.
A couple of the guys couldn’t believe the hand and talked about it for the next 10 minutes. After playing for so long you just know these things are going to happen and you quickly move on. I feel good for maintaining my head. In the past I would get pissed in these situations and end up rebuying about 3 times. That day I was able to walk away after one buy in knowing that I played well and that in the long run it doesn’t pay to be the Don’t Mess with Me Guy!

3Thanks Guys. I worked on it using GIMP but I’m happy with the outcome. The redesign I’m working on is based on the banner.
