I had a chance to play at the Denver Poker Tour tournament at The Shack. I have played in the DPT before, but it has been about a year since I’ve played. As a matter of fact the last time I’ve played was at The Shack. My, how things have changed! The tournament has grown to 6 tables and is a lot of fun. While some things have gotten better things still remain the same. The play is pretty bad, but maybe I’m just holding a grudge for going out on the second hand.

I had gone to kill some time before going to another tournament, so a friend and I stopped in. We got on the list and even though we were listed as number 68 and 67 we sat immediately. I was happy to see that the starting stack had increased to 1000 in chips and the blinds started at 10-20. Since we had about an hour to kill I decided I was going to be uber aggressive but once I sat down I changed my mind.

If we ended up doing well at this tournament we could end up wasting our time there before heading out to a cash game. I decided to just sit and play like I would any other tourney. The second hand, I was dealt black 4-4 and limped three off the button when everyone but one person folded to me. The SB came along and the BB checked his option…..and we’re 5 handed. The flop came out Qh-6c-4h. Everyone checked to me and I lead out for 50. The SB check raised to 100 and I just called.

I wanted to see if a heart came and if not I had a feeling the kid was going to donk off some chips. The turn brought a black 3 and the SB checked to me. I bet 325 and he pushed all-in. I called immediately and he tabled 5-3o, awesome ;) The river was a 7 and I was done. I don’t think I played it bad and he was obviously just trying to push me off my hand. Plus, that’s what I love about these bar poker tournaments. So many people think highly of their draws. It’s not that different from the low NL cash games I play.

This gave us plenty of time to check out the other tournament before we headed to our cash game. I stayed around and had a couple beers until my buddy busted. The staff at The Shack is super nice and the dealers seem to be pretty decent. I really can’t say much more about this tour at this point due to my limited experience, but I can say that I will be back to check it out. I recognized a bunch of people from other tours I play at and a few other players were headed to the cash game later. Overall, a good experience to get back in to the mix of things.
